Elder Justice for Medicare Beneficiaries (October 20, 2020)

Webinar Recording
Webinar Slides

In 2020, CEJC began working in partnership with the Medicare Fraud Patrol at California Health Advocates to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries have equitable access to health care and protections against abuse, neglect, and exploitation. This webinar will describe why Medicare beneficiaries are finding it harder to access quality health care even though Medicare benefits and coverage have remained relatively unchanged in recent years. It will examine barriers to access, their causes, potential remedies, and the role of State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) in helping beneficiaries understand their rights and benefits. (California's SHIP is called HICAP, or the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program.) The session will further describe Medicare fraud and the harm it poses to beneficiaries, communities, and the public.

Presenters:
  • Micki Nozaki, Director, California Health Advocates Senior Medicare Patrol. Micki previously served as a Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) counselor following a career in information security and privacy in government and the healthcare and financial industries.

  • Lisa Nerenberg, Executive Director, California Elder Justice Coalition and author of Elder Justice, Ageism, and Elder Abuse (Springer, 2019).
