Webinar Handout

Getting elder abuse covered by the local and national media is crucial for raising public awareness and prompting policy changes, yet it’s easy to become intimidated by the thought of picking up the phone and talking with a reporter. Let an award-winning journalist who has written about elder financial abuse and an elder abuse expert with more than 10 years of experience working with reporters share their perspectives on how the sometimes mysterious process functions so that you can do it with confidence. This webinar will cover storytelling basics, including how to identify relevant journalists and news outlets, as well as how to craft a pitch that grabs a reporter’s attention. It will also teach you how to protect yourself, your clients, and your job; offer strategies on assisting clients who want to share their stories with reporters; and share tips for developing and maintaining working relationships with reporters so that they come back to you for future stories. In addition, you’ll learn what sparks journalist Nick Leiber’s interest in stories and how he approaches writing stories.
