Webinar Description:
Restorative justice has been called a practice, a framework of principles and values, and a social movement. In this interactive session, the panelists will discuss how restorative justice principles and practices can be applied to prevent elder abuse and reduce the harm it causes to victims and their communities.  It will showcase Waterloo’s  (Ontario) Healing Approaches to Elder Abuse Project, one of the first programs to explore the use of healing circles for people affected by elder mistreatment and the journey to establishing  an Elder Abuse Response Team and now a Senior Support Team. Panelists will also discuss how restorative practices, which are central to the worldview of many indigenous tribes, are being used by tribal councils, community policing programs, and multidisciplinary teams. The panelists will also discuss the potential benefits of the approach, controversies surrounding it, and promising programs.
