By Lisa Nerenberg, Executive Director, CEJC I can’t think of anyone who's contributed more to protecting the rights of older adults than Mary Joy Quinn, who passed away on January 23. She was a pioneer in elder abuse prevention, guardianship, and undue influence, as well as a dear friend and mentor to many, myself included.

After meeting Mary Joy decades ago, I learned what a Joy it was to know her. She was an advocate through and through, with an uplifting quality that tempered the most solemn challenges. She was a woman of the Prairie, from North Dakota, so we had a shared reference point to my living in Minnesota. My admiration for her work in elder abuse prevention and guardianship reforms will endure. I send condolences to those who have had the privilege to be her kin and colleagues.

From another girl of the prairie (Minnesota), I understand the deep sense of connection that brings. Thanks for reminding me about the NCPEA dinner at MJ's home.

I am deeply saddened by Mary Joy's death. Though some people called her Mary, I told her I would always include the JOY in her name. Mary Joy was a force, yet always humble and reachable. She helped me create a conservatorship program, and always respected my point of view. As chair of the Multi-disciplinary team of the Elder Abuse Prevention Consortium (10 years) and one of the creators of and first chair of the San Francisco Bioethics Forum (15 years) I had the JOY of working beside her and benefiting from her wisdom and heart. As a consultant to her research project on Undue Influence, I learned and grew and also felt her strength as we worked in a group to tackle difficult issues. And as a friend, we shared many meals and lots of laughter. I will miss her presence but her contributions live on!!!

So many fascinating projects we worked on together! Our discussions at MDT and ethics committee meetings were always sweeping and far ranging. You always managed to rein us in and capture the best of our ideas.
